She grew up in Southern California, close to her family by her own description, but socially on the edges of school life — shy, not part of any team, partly because the commute to practice from wherever she lived made it impractical. The portrait she painted in her early interviews was of someone who wasn't unpopular so much as just not quite present in the normal teenage social machinery. She started in the industry while still a teenager, and the person who brought her in was someone she already knew intimately: a boyfriend she had dated since high school. The two of them appeared on a podcast together and walked through the dynamic openly, which is either a sign of unusual honesty or unusual comfort with the unusual, depending on your read.
